Peugeot 5008 first generation - an interesting offer for the family

In 2009-2016, Peugeot decided to create a competitor to its cousin Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. This is how the 5008 minivan was created. The idea did not stand the test of time. Today this model is… SUV. But is it worth being interested in the used first generation?

Peugeot 5008 has become the "icing on the cake" among the minivans of the French concern. The brand has already offered a small 1007, a slightly larger 3008 and a family "fortress", i.e. 807. 5008 was created as a competitor to the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, which was his twin brother - both cars were made on the same PSA. disk PF2. The look of the 5008 has been given a bit of a makeover for 2013, although both the old and new versions still look good. Transport capacity is also tempting - the car was available in 5- and 7-seater versions, and the trunk volume offered from 675 to (a trifle!) 2506 liters.

The car didn't have a successor that pursued the same idea, as the tastes of drivers began to follow SUVs like the eyes of a meerkat follow a vulture. Thus, today's 5008 is trying to be a roomy SUV, and the first generation does not hide the family ambitions and aversion to gravel roads. But isn't he emptying the family budget a few years after his debut?

Usterki

Prices for the Peugeot 5008 I are becoming more attractive and it is relatively difficult to find the same young and big car for a large family, which is cheaper. However, driving pleasure depends on the version of the car, in which case petrol is a bad idea. Many of these examples are under the hood of the 1.6 THP engine supplied by the Germans - it also worked under the hood of the MINI and many other PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) models.

As long as it makes a great impression on the road, only the billing mechanics will be happy with the service. The engine became notorious for expensive and frequent timing tensioner failures (road repairs), cracked manifolds, on-board computer problems and carbon deposits. The first failures often appeared after about 50 1.2. km, today these units already have much higher mileage in used cars, which creates additional risks. However, it's worth looking for the smaller and - unfortunately in this car, decidedly less dynamic - PureTech, which is getting good reviews even though it's still a fairly young design. In his case, you just need to remember to systematically change the oil according to the parameters strictly defined by the manufacturer - the timing belt here works in an oil bath and bad or old lubricant “hiccups” on the engine, losing power.

Diesels, on the other hand, are extremely successful, although they require the addition of a special diesel particulate filter fluid. Their problem is high mileage, therefore - despite the overall durability - one has to take into account the malfunctions of the supercharger, the injection system and the need to replace the FAP filter (after about 160 thousand km).

In addition, the rear suspension and electronics are not suitable for everyday use. In the latter case, we are talking primarily about annoying errors on the on-board computer, which sometimes disappear by themselves, and sometimes require a struggle in the service. It is worth checking the car thoroughly before buying at a diagnostic station, both in terms of mechanics and repair history. This will keep you stress-free and reduce the risk of overstretching your budget. Be that as it may, the strongest point of this car is not durability, but practicality.

interior

The traditional steering wheel betrays that the Peugeot 5008 I is a model of the previous generation, because the current manufacturer installs wheels the size of a coffee donut with a clock located above the rim - contrary to appearances, this solution is very convenient. There is no such extravagance in this car, but the cockpit still looks like a transplanted catamaran. It hugs the driver, has a lot of buttons, and still looks quite modern, although you can see this design for years - even after the shabby and old-fashioned multimedia system. The French concept of ergonomics is surprising - the glass roof control button hit the gear lever, and not the ceiling, like other brands, the luggage compartment in front of the passenger is small and has a bulge resembling a hornet's nest, and the control panels behind the wheel take some getting used to, because they are simply can not see. These shortcomings, however, somewhat obscure the undoubted advantages.

Firstly, in dealerships, the car can be found with 3 rows of seats as standard. The latter will only work for children or as a torture chair for adults, but that's the way it is. In addition, all seats except the driver's can be folded down, which turns the car into a cargo Boeing, with the difference that it cannot fly. There were some interesting flavors too. The materials used are average in places, especially in the trunk, but on the latter, the light can be pulled out all the way to get a flashlight. Perfect for family camping and nightly searching for insects crawling under the seats in the car. In addition, rear passengers can move the seats, they have their own adjustable air vents, the floor is flat everywhere, and there is a pocket in each door. Easy access to front and rear 12V sockets is also handy – you can connect phones or tablets to them during long trips, give children a moment of peace. But which engine version to choose?

On my way

The 1.6 THP variant makes the best impression on the road. Minimum 156 hp enough to drive this car relatively cheerfully, and the engine readily responds to the commands of the right foot and works very culturally, spontaneously entering into high revs. Unfortunately, it is emergency and expensive to use. Fans of gasoline units should bet on 1.2 PureTech, which, apart from the specific sound of 3 cylinders and a slight lack of power with such dimensions (130 hp), has practically no other serious drawbacks. There is also a naturally aspirated 1.6 VTi unit, but in 5008 cooperation with it resembles a conversation between a Pole and a Chinese about life - it's hard to get along.

In this car, all diesels will be the best choice. They are not particularly problematic, although the 1.6 HDi, whose power starts at 109 hp, is rather weak. It is worth looking for an instance with a 2.0 HDi under the hood, which has at least 150 hp. This is a very good and proven engine. In addition, especially after warming up, it works fine and quiet, and a small power reserve makes itself felt pleasantly when overtaking, even with a fully loaded car, and during more dynamic maneuvers. In turn, the suspension is clearly focused on comfort and does not like sudden changes in direction and serpentines. The 5008 is a car designed for longer routes, although the manual transmission spoils the positive impression a bit. The car is slow, but in this case it does not matter, because hardly anyone will drive this car dynamically. Gear shifts smoothly and gently during operation.

The Peugeot 5008 I is not the SUV that the world loves so much, but it still has many strengths. It is enough to put up with its shortcomings and it turns out that this is one of the most interesting offers for large families at this price and at this age.
