Why brake pads squeak - reasons for the whistle of car pads

Squeaking and whistling of brake pads are not very pleasant sounds that may indicate that:

  • the pads are worn out and should be replaced;
  • new pads have not yet worn in and the creak will stop over time;
  • there are problems with the brake system;
  • wear indicator - a metal plate rubs against the disc during braking;
  • the brake cylinder is faulty and the pads are pressed against the disc more than necessary (while the wheel can still wedge).

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons for the creaking of pads, you can determine the real reason by indirect signs or at the service station.

If you recently changed the pads and this unpleasant sound appeared, then most likely there is a small protective layer on top of the friction coating. Try hard braking a few times, the sound should disappear after a few hard stops. In the same way, you can get rid of the squeak if a lot of dirt and dust has accumulated on the pads. During hard braking, the pads heat up and all the dirt simply crumbles.

If during braking the brake pedal vibrates, is poorly or vice versa is too easy to press, the car skids or drifts to the side - the problem is pad wear. An urgent replacement is required, otherwise the brake discs or drums themselves will suffer, the brake cylinder may leak, and your safety may suffer. You can check the wear of the pads using the indicator, which is visible through the caliper window. If there is no way to measure wear in this way, you will have to completely remove the wheel.

If the pads have an indicator plate, it can also make an unpleasant sound while rubbing against the disc. The plate is made of metal and can be a serious hazard to the brake disc. In this case, it is better to immediately replace the pads, it makes sense to demand a refund in the store.

If the new pads creak, and none of the above methods to get rid of this annoying sound help, then most likely you are dealing with a factory defect. Friction linings can be made from a variety of materials and compositions, sometimes manufacturers can experiment with the composition, and this is reflected in the rapid wear of the pads.

Thus, so that the pads do not creak, you need:

  • buy products of famous brands;
  • check the condition of the pads and change them in time;
  • undergo diagnostics of the brake system, if no other ways to get rid of squeaks help.
