Glasses freeze from the inside: is it possible to solve the problem

If the car is operated in a cold region of the country, then the owner of this car will sooner or later face the problem of freezing windows from the passenger compartment. This phenomenon may have several reasons. Fortunately, the driver can eliminate many of them on his own. Let's try to figure out how it's done.

Why do windows freeze from the inside

If the windows in the passenger compartment of the car are frosted over from the inside, then the air in the passenger compartment is too humid.

Car windows frost over due to high humidity in the cabin

Therefore, when the temperature in the cabin drops, water is released from the air and settles on the windows, forming condensate, which quickly turns into frost at negative temperatures. Consider the typical causes of condensation:

  • interior ventilation problems. It's simple: in the cabin of each car there are holes for ventilation. These holes can become clogged over time. When there is no ventilation, moist air cannot leave the cabin and accumulates in it. As a result, condensation begins to form on the glass, followed by the formation of ice;
  • snow gets into the cabin. Not every driver cares about how to shake off their shoes properly when getting into a car in winter. As a result, the snow is in the cabin. It melts, dripping onto the rubber mats under the feet of the driver and passengers. A puddle appears, which gradually evaporates, increasing the humidity in the cabin. The result is still the same: frost on the windows;
  • various types of glass. Cabin glass of various brands in humid air freezes differently. For example, Stalinit brand glass, which is installed on most old domestic cars, freezes faster than triplex brand glass. The reason is the different thermal conductivity of the glasses. The "triplex" has a polymer film inside (and sometimes even two of them), which should hold back the fragments if the glass breaks. And this film also slows down the cooling of the glass, so even with a very humid interior, condensate on the “triplex” forms later than on the “stalinite”;

  • heating system malfunction. This phenomenon is especially common on classic VAZ cars, the heaters in which have never had good tightness. Most often in such machines the stove tap flows. And since it is located almost under the glove compartment, the antifreeze flowing from there is under the feet of the front passenger. Further, the scheme is still the same: a puddle is formed, which evaporates, moistening the air and causing the glass to freeze;
  • car wash in the cold season. Usually drivers wash their cars in late autumn. During this period, there is a lot of dirt on the roads, the snow has not yet fallen, and the air temperature is already low. All these factors lead to an increase in humidity in the cabin and the formation of internal ice, which is especially noticeable in the morning when the car is parked and has not yet warmed up.

How to remove frosted glass

To prevent freezing of the windows, the driver needs to somehow reduce the humidity in the cabin, simultaneously getting rid of the ice that has already formed. Consider options for solving the problem.

  1. The most obvious option is to open the car doors, ventilate the interior thoroughly, then close it and turn on the heater at full power. Let the heater run for 20 minutes. In most cases, it solves the problem.
  2. If the machine is equipped with heated windows, then along with ventilation and turning on the heater, heating should also be activated. Ice from the windshield and rear window will disappear much faster.

  3. Replacing rugs. This measure is especially relevant in winter. Instead of rubber mats, cloth mats are installed. At the same time, the mats should be as fleecy as possible so that the moisture from the boots is absorbed into them as quickly as possible. Of course, the absorbency of any mat is limited, so the driver will have to systematically remove the mats and dry them. Otherwise, the glass will start to freeze again.

  4. The use of special formulations. The driver, having found frost on the glass, usually tries to scrape it off with some kind of scraper or other improvised tool. But this can damage the glass. It is better to use an ice remover. Now on sale there are a lot of formulations sold both in ordinary bottles and in spray cans. It is better to buy a spray can, for example, Eltrans. The second most popular lineup is called CarPlan Blue Star.

Folk methods of dealing with icing

Some drivers prefer not to spend money on all sorts of tricks, but use proven old-fashioned methods to eliminate ice.

  1. Homemade anti-icing liquid. It is prepared very simply: an ordinary plastic bottle with a spray is taken (for example, from a windshield wiper). Ordinary table vinegar and water are poured into the bottle. Ratio: water - one part, vinegar - three parts. The liquid is thoroughly mixed and a thin layer is sprayed onto the glass. Then the glass should be wiped with a thin cloth. This procedure is best done before leaving the car in the parking lot overnight. Then in the morning you won’t have to mess with frosted glass.

  2. The use of salt. 100 grams of ordinary salt is wrapped in a thin cloth or napkin. This rag wipes all the windows in the car interior from the inside. This method is inferior in efficiency to a home-made liquid, but for some time it can hold back icing.

DO THE GLASSES IN THE CAR FREEZE? Do it

So, the main problem that causes icing of glass is high humidity. It is on this problem that the driver should focus if he does not want to constantly scrape pieces of ice from the windshield. Fortunately, in the vast majority of cases, it is enough to simply change the floor mats in the car and ventilate it well.
