Test Kratek: Citroën C5 Tourer HDi 200 Exclusive

In the first C5 (and we are behind it) this was not in the "original" or after the renovation. Even the current C5 is not entirely new since its third year, but it does have something that Xantia, for example, had: an unobtrusive impression of timelessness.

1955 has never happened again, but this is not Citroën's fault, this is the time we live in. With a car as revolutionary as the DS was at the time, today Citroën, BMW, or any other well-known manufacturer can’t take the fuss from their presentation.

However, the C5 you see in the photos is a worthy successor to the DS model. However, I will not list the size class, mechanics (hydropneumatic suspension, tracking headlights) and other more or less measurable things here. Here I would just like to highlight the feelings that the driver experiences while driving.

Okay, it's true: this C5 has (mostly torque) a powerful, actually very powerful engine, has an adjustable chassis stiffness, has a sporty automatic transmission setup, and has a perfectly decent steering wheel so it can be driven fast. But not only along the highway, but also along the beautiful winding country roads. Engine power starts to slowly decline only when the speedometer needle approaches two hundred, and if the driver helps the gearbox a little with the shift, cornering (with a not-so-small radius) can also be somewhat and somewhat enjoyable. ...

However, it still seems like this C5 doesn't want to be sporty or that it doesn't want to flaunt its sportiness. After all, not everyone (buyers) also needs a sports car. Especially for such a C5 wants to be comfortable, and if I can be a little prophetic: the biggest Citroën should be like that.

We measure comfort in several ways. The first, of course, concerns the chassis. A good 2,8 meters between the axles is a good starting point, and the hydropneumatics in this modern version are just an accessory that separates each such blissful Citroën from equally large cars. More comfortable, of course. Then the seats: the leather on the sides of the seats and their wide electrical adjustment (including three-stage heating) ensure a comfortable fit, even one that does not inspire appetite after a sporty ride. And finally, the ride: Powerful power steering and ease of movement give the impression that well-trained mechanics are designed to make the driver feel good, relaxed and, of course, comfortable.

Despite the 200 in the name, which indicates the "power" of the engine, driving is quiet as long as you don't start the engine above 4.500 rpm, which is never necessary for turbo diesels, and especially for the C5. And the 70-liter fuel tank does not need to be refueled for long, as it can easily cover a thousand miles if you drive carefully and with a speed limit.

At the same time, only the steering wheel is a little worried, both for those who want a sportier driving, and for those who, in their life philosophy, belong to such a Citroën. Its first drawback is that it does not return to its original position (or does so very subtly), and the second is that it senses the point where the servo is engaged. That is, when the driver wants to turn it gently and easily after driving with a stationary steering wheel, he feels a step: in order to turn it, he must overcome a little resistance. In principle, this does not affect the ride from any of the angles (safety, dynamics ...), but such a small "mistake" can be easily missed.

So Tourer? Old fans of the brand might have preferred to hear Break, but that didn't affect the look and feel of the experience. This body shape matches the C5, the designers have done a good job of aligning the rear end nicely with the rest of the bodywork, so the interior of the rear end – also due to the power tailgate – is more comfortable and flexible. We vote for.

But even this is a matter of taste and taste. Still true: The C5 is very good, says Citroen. Even if it is Tourer and also (or especially) if it is equipped with such mechanics and equipment. A car with a soul. André-Gustave would be pleased.

evaluation

  • They are also more powerful than the Citroën C5, but in the motorized one there is nothing like that. Quite the opposite: there is enough capacity, and given the notorious driving comfort of this brand's cars, it seems that such a mechanic is just right for the old followers. And the equipment too. The only question is whether it is a sedan or a Tourer. We recommend the latter.

We praise and reproach

inner drawers, trunk

the ability to disable sensors (except for speed)

quiet interior

soft steering wheel, pitch sensitivity when deflected
