Test: Volkswagen Golf 1.5 eTSI (2020) // Golf from the future

So over the toe is of course best. It offers more than any Golf to date, regardless of version or equipment. Of course, you need to know how to use all this. Volkswagen wants to convince young users of the new Golf. They, in turn, are demanding buyers, buyers demanding new car regulations. They are interested not only in engine power, but also in connectivity, digitization and direct interaction of the car with their smartphone. I am not saying that this is a bad thing, as both the driver and the rest of the passengers in the car get the convenience of using the car like never before. Of course, it is also true that young Volkswagen customers are needed. This means they do not have them yet, and even with the full digitalization of the new Golf there is no guarantee that they will have them.

What about the rest? Not only older clients, but all of us who are somewhere in the middle in terms of age? Are we still going to push golf so hard to the stars? Will it still be the best mid-range car for us?

Of course, time will give these answers, but I don't have an answer yet. For me, the Golf was never the best car because the crowd screamed so much, but because it turned out to be the best... Because if I tried so hard, I wouldn't pick on him. Not inside or in the drive, engines or transmission. But here the new Golf is still better! A little doubt, at least, the interior causes me. Maybe it's also because I'm not the youngest anymore, and therefore digitalization does not tempt me so much. I’m not saying that she doesn’t, but I don’t want to be her slave. And he somehow became the new Golf. He was sacrificed at the factory to please the young population. But at the same time, they sacrificed much more than it seems at first glance. The Golf was my best car also because it was perfect in terms of ergonomics. When you got into it, your hand automatically moved to the most important switches and buttons. This is no longer the case.

Ergonomics

Older drivers will require some tweaking. The engineers cleaned up the interior, unfortunately, and much-needed buttons, and thus kept too many things in the central unit, which we navigate only with virtual touch buttons. Many will miss the radio volume control buttons and probably the air conditioning control buttons. New ways of regulating these systems do not allow them to be carefree while driving, especially at night, since the virtual and touch tiles are not yet highlighted.

Intuition is at least a little heightened by shortcuts to the most important interfaces.

Infotainment screen

Controlling the infotainment system via the touchscreen (which is also voice-controlled, but unfortunately not in Slovenian) is simple, but not flawless due to its size and transparency. This is a complete new addition to Volkswagen's offering and will require some improvements to ensure that the interaction between driver, system and smartphone (which makes many new services available to the driver and passengers) is flawless.

You also need a finger to adjust volume and temperature.

Feeling in the salon

The driver's driving position in the test car was excellent, thanks also to the electrically adjustable ergoActive seats. They are part of the standard equipment in the Style package, and in addition to being electrically adjustable, they also offer massage, remember three different settings, and also allow you to adjust the length of the seat section.

The interior may be too fantastic, but on the other hand, it is clean and elegant.

Appearance

Here Golf remains Golf. By nature, conservative Germans have done a great job and gave it a fresh look, fresh and dynamic. What will happen to the GTI version!

The 110-liter petrol turbocharger with 150 kW (1,5 horsepower) now automatically deactivates a couple of cylinders at low load, helping to reduce fuel consumption. However, the question arises, what is the fuel economy in the event that we systematically help the engine to work with only two cylinders. It also requires a lot of attention and feelings. Otherwise, the new Golf rides well, the chassis is solid and responsive, and the body tilts into corners when there aren't many.

Overall rating (470/600)

  • Great design and driving, digitalization and connectivity, perhaps even one step ahead of the time.

  • Comfort (94

    / 115)

Unfortunately, the Golf has lost its internal ergonomics due to (over) digitization.

  • Transmission (60

    / 80)

Proven equipment including engine, transmission and chassis.

  • Driving performance (83

    / 100)

Great location, although may give too little driver feedback.

  • Security (88/115)

Plenty of assistive systems are available at an additional cost, and the test Golf did not boast of them.

  • Economy and environment (48

    / 80)

Even if the base price is not the lowest, the Golf is always redeemed at the cost of preserving value.
