VAZ 2107 in the original has very modest technical characteristics. Therefore, the owners modify the car on their own. It is possible to increase engine power by installing a turbine.

Turbine operating principle

To increase engine power, it is necessary to make the supply of the fuel-air mixture to the combustion chambers more intensive. The turbine crashes into the exhaust system, is driven by a jet of exhaust gases and, using the energy of these gases, increases the pressure in the power unit. As a result, the rate at which the mixture enters the cylinders is increased.

Under normal conditions, the VAZ 2107 engine has a gasoline combustion rate of about 25%. After installing a turbocharger, this indicator increases markedly, and the efficiency of the motor increases.

Choosing a turbine for a VAZ 2107

There are two types of turbines:

  • low-performance (boost pressure 0,2–0,4 bar);
  • high-performance (boost pressure 1 bar and more).

The installation of the second type turbine will require a serious modernization of the engine. Installation of a low-performance device will ensure compliance with all parameters regulated by the automaker.

Before turbocharging the VAZ 2107 engine, you will need:

  1. Intercooler installation. Air when using the turbine heats up to 700оC. Without additional cooling, not only the compressor can burn out, but the engine itself can also be damaged.
  2. Re-equipment of the carburetor fuel supply system to the injection one. A weak intake manifold on carburetor engines will not withstand the pressure of the turbine and may burst. On units with a carburetor, you can install a compressor instead of full turbocharging.

In general, the advantages of the VAZ 2107 turbocharged engine are very doubtful. Therefore, before installing the turbine on a discontinued vehicle with modest technical characteristics, the feasibility of the decision should be carefully evaluated. It is much easier to install a compressor on a VAZ 2107. In this case:

  • there will be no excess pressure in the system that can destroy the manifold, car suspension, etc.;
  • no need to install an intercooler;
  • no need to re-equip the carburetor system to the injection system;
  • the cost of re-equipment will decrease - a complete compressor costs about 35 thousand rubles, which is much lower than the cost of a turbine;
  • 50% increase in engine power.

I had to personally observe how a VAZ 2107 with a turbocharged engine was racing. It is difficult to overtake him on the track, but the car cannot keep the speed for a long time, in my opinion, although I myself did not drive.

There are two ways to install a turbine on a VAZ 2107:

  • through the intake manifold;
  • through the carburetor.

The second option is more efficient, since it provides a direct formation of the air-fuel mixture. To complete the work you will need:

  • a set of wrenches and screwdrivers;
  • drill;
  • containers for draining refrigerant and oil.

Connecting a turbine or compressor to the exhaust system

The turbine will require a certain amount of space in the engine compartment. Sometimes it is installed in place of the battery, which is transferred to the trunk. For the VAZ 2107, a turbine from a diesel tractor is suitable, which does not require water cooling and is connected to a standard exhaust manifold. The principle of its operation is based on the circulation of hot exhaust gases, which, after spinning the turbine, return back to the exhaust system.

The turbine installation algorithm depends on the type of engine. For the atmospheric power unit VAZ 2107, it will be necessary to additionally reduce the geometric compression ratio by installing the original intake manifold (if it is absent).

Further actions are performed in the following order.

  1. The inlet pipeline is installed.
  2. The engine power system is being modernized.
  3. An exhaust pipe is installed instead of the exhaust manifold.

  4. A set of measures is being taken to improve the lubrication system, ventilation and crankcase cooling.
  5. The bumper, generator, belt and standard air filter are dismantled.
  6. The heat shield is removed.
  7. The refrigerant is being drained.
  8. The hose connecting the cooling system to the engine is removed.
  9. The oil is drained.
  10. A hole is carefully drilled in the engine into which the fitting (adapter) is screwed.

The compressor is installed as follows.

  1. A new zero resistance air filter is installed directly on the intake manifold.
  2. The outlet pipe of the compressor is connected with a special wire to the inlet fitting of the carburetor. The joints are tightened with special hermetic clamps.

  3. The compressor is located in the free space near the distributor.
  4. The compressor is secured to the front of the cylinder block using the supplied bracket. Additional rollers for the drive belt can be installed on the same bracket.
  5. Instead of the air filter, a specially made box is installed that serves as an adapter for air injection. If in any way it is possible to make this adapter more airtight, the boosting efficiency will increase several times.
  6. A new zero resistance air filter is installed directly on the intake manifold.

  7. The drive belt is put on.

This algorithm is considered an inexpensive and effective way to tune a VAZ 2107 engine. During the installation process, to increase the boost efficiency, you can completely rewrite the carburetor and look for ways to improve the tightness of new connections.

Turbine oil supply

To supply oil to the turbine, you will need to install a special adapter. After that, the intake manifold and the most heated part of the turbine itself will need to be equipped with a heat shield.

The oil is supplied to the engine through a screwed-in fitting onto which a silicone hose is put. After this operation, it is imperative to install an intercooler and an intake piping (tube) to get air into the intake manifold. The latter will allow observing the required temperature regime during the operation of the turbine.

Turbine connections

The main pipe is responsible for the removal of exhaust gases - part of the exhaust that did not enter the turbine is removed through it. Before installation, all air pipes must be thoroughly cleaned and wiped with a cloth soaked in gasoline. Dirt from the hoses can enter the turbine and damage it.

All pipes must be securely fastened with clamps. Some experts recommend using plastic clamps for this, which will firmly fix the connections and do not damage the rubber.

Connecting the turbine to the carburetor

When connecting a turbine through a carburetor, air consumption will increase markedly. In addition, the turbocharging system should be located in the engine compartment next to the carburetor, where it is difficult to find free space. Therefore, the feasibility of such a decision is questionable. At the same time, with successful installation, the turbine will work much more efficiently.

In the carburetor, three main jets and additional power channels are responsible for fuel consumption. In normal mode, at a pressure of 1,4–1,7 bar, they do their job well, but after installing the turbine, they no longer meet the changed conditions and environmental standards.

There are two ways to connect the turbine to the carburetor.

  1. The turbine is placed behind the carburetor. With the air pull scheme, the air-fuel mixture passes through the entire system.
  2. The turbine is placed in front of the carburetor. The pushing of air occurs in the opposite direction, and the mixture does not pass through the turbine.

Both methods have their pros and cons.

  1. The first way is simpler. The air pressure in the system is quite low. However, the carburettor does not require a compressor bypass valve, intercooler, etc.
  2. The second way is more complicated. The air pressure in the system increases markedly. The content of carbon dioxide in the exhaust is reduced and the possibility of a quick cold start is provided. However, this method is much more difficult to implement. Requires installation of an intercooler, bypass valve, etc.

The air pull system is rarely used by tuners. Unless she "gets along" in areas with a warm climate, and the owner of the "seven" will not intend to develop serious engine power.

Connecting the turbine to the injector

Installing a turbine on an injection engine is more appropriate. In this case, the VAZ 2107:

  • fuel consumption will decrease;
  • the environmental characteristics of the exhaust will improve (a third of the fuel will no longer be emitted into the atmosphere);
  • engine vibration will be reduced.

On engines with an injection system, during the installation of the turbine, it is possible to further increase the boost. To do this, a spring is placed in the actuator under the planned pressure. The tubes leading to the solenoid will need to be plugged, and the solenoid itself left connected to the connector - in extreme cases, the coil changes to a resistance of 10 kOhm.

Thus, reducing the pressure on the actuator will increase the force required to open the wastegate. As a result, boost will become more intense.
