This, in turn, will lead to failures in the engine and its inadequate response to pressing the accelerator pedal, as well as a sharp increase in fuel consumption.

The timing chain tension system VAZ 2106 consists of three elements:

  • timing chain tensioner shoe;
  • tensioner oil fitting;
  • timing chain damper.

Each of these elements has its own purpose.

  1. The timing chain tensioner shoe is a curved steel plate that periodically presses on the timing chain and reduces the amplitude of its oscillations. The surface of the shoe in contact with the chain is covered with a particularly durable polymer material. This material is quite durable, but when it wears out from under the hood, loud knocks begin to be heard from the beating of the chain on the cylinder block.
  2. The tensioner oil nipple is the device to which the shoe is attached. Because of this fitting, the shoe extends and presses on the timing chain if it weakens, and slides back when the chain is tensioned. A high-pressure oil line with an oil pressure sensor is connected to the fitting. If the chain sags when the engine is started, the sensor detects a decrease in pressure in the line. This decrease is compensated by the supply of an additional portion of oil, which presses on the piston in the fitting. As a result, the shoe extends and dampens the vibration of the chain.

  3. The timing chain guide is a metal plate mounted in front of the idler shoe on the opposite side of the chain. Its purpose is to dampen the residual vibration of the timing chain after it is pressed down by the tension shoe. It is due to the damper that the final stabilization of the chain and the synchronous operation of the crankshaft and timing shaft are achieved.

Types of tension systems

At different times, the task of maintaining a constant timing chain tension was solved in various ways. By design, tension systems are distinguished:

  • mechanical;
  • hydraulic.

First, a mechanical system was developed in which the tension shoe was actuated by the elastic force of a conventional spring. Since the springs with shoes pressed on the chain continuously, such a system wore out quickly.

The mechanical system was replaced by a hydraulic calming system, which is used on the VAZ 2106. Here, the movement of the shoe is provided by a special hydraulic fitting, into which oil is supplied as needed. Such a system lasts much longer, and the driver has noticeably fewer problems with its maintenance.

To replace the fitting and tension shoe, you will need:

  • a new tension shoe for the VAZ 2106 (costs about 300 rubles);
  • set of socket wrenches;
  • vorotok-ratchet;
  • set of open-end wrenches;
  • steel wire with a diameter of 2 mm and a length of 35 cm;
  • flat blade screwdriver.

The order of work

Before starting work, it is necessary to remove the air filter - without dismantling it, it is impossible to get to the tensioner shoe. The work is carried out in the following order.

  1. With a socket head 14, five bolts securing the air filter are unscrewed. The filter is removed.

  2. The six bolts securing the cylinder block cover are unscrewed. Since there is not enough space to work with an ordinary crank, a 13 socket wrench with a ratchet is used.
  3. With a 10 open-end wrench, two nuts securing the tension fitting, which drives the shoe, are unscrewed. The fitting is removed from its seat.

  4. Use a long flat-blade screwdriver to push the tension shoe to the side.

  5. A hook about 20 cm long is made of steel wire, with which the tensioner shoe clings to the eye.

  6. Loosen the two bolts securing the timing chain guide.

  7. To loosen the chain, the timing shaft is rotated a quarter of a turn. To do this, use an open-end wrench for 17.

  8. Using a wire hook, the tensioner shoe is carefully removed from its niche.
  9. The worn out tensioner shoe is replaced with a new one.
  10. Reassemble in the reverse order.

The tension shoe VAZ 2106 cannot be repaired. If it breaks (for example, due to metal fatigue), then it immediately changes to a new one.

The surface of the shoe is covered with a durable polymer layer, which is applied by the manufacturer using special equipment. It is impossible to restore such a coating in garage conditions.

The timing chain VAZ 2106 is tensioned as follows.

  1. According to the above algorithm, the air filter, fitting and tensioner shoe are removed.
  2. A 19 spanner wrench is put on the crankshaft nut.
  3. Using the key, the shaft is rotated clockwise until the chain tension under the crankshaft and above it is the same. The tension level is checked manually. To fully tension the chain, the crankshaft must make at least two full revolutions.

  4. The crankshaft can also be turned with a starter. This method is suitable only for experienced motorists. The key in the ignition lock turns literally for half a second - during this time the crankshaft will make exactly two turns.

Thus, even an inexperienced motorist can replace the fitting and shoe of the VAZ 2106 timing chain tensioner with his own hands. This will require only a minimum set of locksmith tools and the exact implementation of the instructions of specialists.
