The former flagship of the Russian automobile industry VAZ 2110 with a 1,5 16 valve engine replacing the pump and timing roller belt. The recommended replacement interval is from 40 to 60 thousand kilometers. In general, we recommend that all buyers check the condition of the belt at least once every 5 thousand kilometers, or once a year. But knowing the quality of our spare parts, it is better more often.

Attention! In this engine, when the timing belt breaks, almost all valves bend.

Required Tools

We will need a standard set of wrenches and sockets, as well as a wrench for the tensioner pulley, it is sold in any mechanical workshop.

Preparatory operations

We removed the power steering damper and reservoir so they wouldn't get in the way in the future.

We loosen from the seventeenth bolt, the tensioner pulley of the auxiliary drive belt, it is also the alternator belt and remove the last one. It will not be possible to completely remove it, because the motor mount is in the middle. If the drive belt needs to be replaced, you will need to unscrew the motor mount. We do not touch the generator, it does not interfere with us.

We remove the tension roller. We unscrew the screws of the upper protective cap, they are under the hexagon.

We are removing it.

Remove the right wheel, plastic fender and drain the antifreeze.

Top dead center setting

We see the crankshaft pulley. For its screw, turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marks on the camshaft pulleys and the timing belt cover coincide.

The same goes for the intake camshaft. He is right. On its pulley there is an inner ring for the phase sensor, so it is very difficult to confuse the pulleys.

Remove the crankshaft pulley. Stop the crankshaft with the help of a friend. We put him in the car, forced him into fifth gear and slammed on the brakes. And at this time, with a slight movement of the hand, unscrew the bolt of the crankshaft pulley. Remove it together with the lower protective cover.

We see that the pulley mark and the oil pump return groove matched. The repair manuals also advise marking the flywheel, but I think this is superfluous, since when replacing the flywheel it may simply not be marked.

We loosen the bolts of the seventeenth tension and bypass rollers and remove the timing belt. Then there are the videos themselves. We still change them.

Replacing the pump

We stop and unscrew the camshaft pulleys and remove them. Remember that the right camshaft has a pulley with an inner ring for the phase sensor. The image should look like this.

We unscrew everything that holds the plastic protective cap and remove the latter. Unscrew the three screws that hold the pump, hex.

And we take it out.

The pump for a sixteen-valve engine is slightly different from the usual one for an eight-valve engine. It has a small threaded eye for attaching a protective cover.

Lubricate the joint with a thin layer of sealant and put the pump in place. Tighten the fixing screws. We put the protective cover in place. We checked that he sat down in place, otherwise he would rub against the belt. If everything is in order, we turn everything that holds it and put the camshaft pulleys and new rollers.

Installing a new timing belt

We check the coincidence of the marks on the camshafts and crankshaft. Install a new timing belt. If there are no direction arrows, set the label reading from left to right.

The right, descending branch of the belt must be taut. You can turn the right camshaft clockwise a few degrees, put on the strap and turn it back. This is how we will pull the descending branch. The tension roller has two holes for a special key. You can find it at any auto shop. The issue price is 60 rubles. To tension the timing belt, insert the special wrench and turn the pulley counterclockwise. Since there is a lot of controversy about the tension of the timing belt, we will write this: A tensioned belt should have a sag between the camshafts of no more than 5mm when pressed and 7mm on the longest branch (especially experienced ones).

Remember: a belt that is too tight will shorten the life of the pump, and due to an insufficiently tensioned belt, the cylinder head repair can be completed. (photo below)

Checking all labels. Turn the crankshaft twice and check the marks again. If the pistons did not fit the valves and the markings matched, then congratulations. Then we put everything in place in the reverse order of disassembly. Don't forget to tighten the screws. We tighten the service belt roller with the same key as the timing belt tensioner roller. Fill with antifreeze and start the car. We wish the belt many years of service, but do not forget to check it periodically - after all, it is made in Russia.
