Replacing the timing belt Renault Duster 2.0

Replacing the timing belt Renault Duster 2.0 is a rather laborious operation that requires additional tools. In addition, the 2-liter Renault Duster gasoline engine does not have timing marks on the camshaft pulleys, which certainly complicates the work. According to the manufacturer's standards, the belt must be replaced every 60 thousand kilometers or every 4 years, whichever comes first.

Before starting work, you need to understand that this engine does not have alignment marks on the camshaft pulleys, so read this article carefully so that the valves do not bend after incorrect assembly. To get started, take a closer look at the Timing Duster 2.0 in the next photo.

Actually, in addition to the tension and bypass rollers (absent), the water pump (pump) pulley is also involved in the process. Therefore, when replacing the belt, be sure to inspect the pump for stains, excessive play. In case of bad signs and suspicions, in addition to the timing belt, also change the Duster pump.

Before you begin to replace the belt and remove the covers, you will need to remove the engine mount. But before you remove the power unit, you need to "hang" it. To do this, a wooden block was inserted between the crankcase and the subframe so that the right support of the power unit could no longer support the weight of the unit. To do this, using a wide mounting sheet, slightly raise the motor and stick it on the tree, as in the photo.

We take out from the brackets located on the support of the Renault Duster engine mount, the pipes for supplying fuel to the rail and supplying fuel vapor to the receiver. Remove the wiring harness bracket from the hole in the support bracket. With a “16” head, unscrew the three screws that secure the support to the top cover of the distributor handle. Using the same tool, unscrew the three screws that secure the bracket to the body. Remove the right bracket from the power unit.

Now we need to get to the belt. With the “13” head, we unscrew the three bolts and nuts that hold the top timing cover. Remove the top timing cover.

Check timing belt tension. When installing a new timing belt, you will need to properly adjust the tensioner. For this, there are special markings on the tensioner roller.

With normal belt tension, the moving indicator should line up with the notch in the idle speed indicator. To properly adjust the belt tension, you will need a key on "10" and a hex key on "6".

When installing a new belt, loosen the tightening nut of the tensioner roller with a “10” wrench and turn the roller clockwise with a “6” hexagon (pulling the belt) until the pointers are aligned. But before that time, you still have to remove the old belt and put on a new one.

The first and important event is unscrewing the crankshaft pulley bolt. To do this, it is necessary to block the displacement of the pulley. You can ask the assistant to shift into fifth gear and apply the brakes, but if this method does not work, there is an alternative.

We take out the piston from the fasteners of the plastic bracket of the wiring harnesses to the clutch housing. Remove the support with wiring harnesses from the clutch housing. Now you can take a flat screwdriver and stick it between the teeth of the flywheel ring gear.

Usually this method helps to unscrew the bolt quickly enough.

With a head on “8”, we unscrew the five screws that hold the lower timing cover.

Before removing the timing belt, it is necessary to set the crankshaft and camshafts to TDC (top dead center) on the compression stroke of the first cylinder. Now we need to block the crankshaft from turning. To do this, use the E-14 head to unscrew the special technological plug on the cylinder block.

We insert an adjusting pin into the hole in the cylinder block - a rod with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of at least 70 mm (you can use a drill rod with a diameter of 8 mm). This will block the rotation of the crankshaft when replacing the timing belt Renault Duster with a 2 liter engine.

When the crankshaft is in the TDC position of the pistons of the 1st and 4th cylinders, the finger should enter the rectangular slot in the crankshaft cheek and block the shaft when trying to turn it in one direction or another. When the crankshaft is in the correct position, the keyway at the end of the crankshaft should be between the two ribs on the cylinder head cover. Next photo.

To block the rotation of the camshafts, we carry out the following operations. To block the camshafts, it is necessary to remove the plastic plugs on the left end of the cylinder head. Why remove the resonator from the air path? The plastic end caps can be easily pierced with a screwdriver, although you will need to insert new end caps later.

After removing the plugs, it turns out that the ends of the camshafts are slotted. In the photo we mark them with red arrows.

These grooves will help us block the rotation of the camshafts. True, for this you will have to make a plate in the shape of the letter “P” from a piece of metal. The dimensions of the plate in our photo below.

Now you can safely remove the belt and put on a new one. Loosen the tightening nut on the tensioner pulley with a 10 wrench. Turn the roller counterclockwise with the hexagon “6”, loosening the belt tension. We remove the belt, we also change the tension and support rollers. The new belt should have 126 teeth and a width of 25,4 mm. When installing, pay attention to the arrows on the strap - these are the directions of movement of the strap (clockwise).

When installing a new tension roller, the bent end of its bracket must fit into the recess in the cylinder head. See photo for clarity.

We install the belt on the toothed pulleys of the crankshaft and camshafts. We start the front branch of the belt under the coolant pump pulley, and the rear branch - under the tension and support rollers. Adjust the timing belt tension (see above). We take out the adjusting pin from the hole in the cylinder block and remove the device for fixing the camshafts. Turn the crankshaft two times clockwise until the grooves at the ends of the camshafts are in the desired position (see above). We check the valve timing and belt tension and, if necessary, repeat the adjustments. We install the threaded plug in its place and press new plugs onto the camshaft. Additional installation of the engine is carried out in the reverse order.
