In addition, antifreeze, which is most often used in cars today, performs a lubricating function, albeit an insignificant one. For this purpose, it is even used in some pumps.

Sometimes you can find disputes about which is better - antifreeze or antifreeze? If you understand the intricacies, then the antifreeze is actually antifreeze, but a special one, developed during the years of socialism. It surpasses the known types of coolants in many ways and cannot be compared with water at all, although it is still not understood by many.

So, what are the most significant advantages of antifreeze:

• When heated, antifreeze has much less expansion than water. This means that even if there is a small gap, there will be enough room for it to expand and it will not disturb the system, tear the cover or pipes;
• It boils at a higher temperature than ordinary water;
• Antifreeze flows even at sub-zero temperatures, and at very low temperatures it turns not into ice, but into a gel, again, it does not break the system, but simply freezes slightly;
• Does not foam;
• It does not contribute to corrosion, like water, but, on the contrary, protects the engine from it.

Reasons for replacement

If we talk about the service life of antifreeze in the VAZ 2110, then it is within 150 thousand kilometers, and it is advisable not to exceed this mileage. Although in practice it happens that the replacement or the need for partial replacement of the coolant occurs long before the speedometer shows so many kilometers.

Possible reasons:

• Have you noticed that the color of the antifreeze in the expansion tank has changed, it has become, so to speak, rusty;
• On the surface of the tank, he noticed an oil film;
• Your VAZ 2110 often boils, although there are no special prerequisites for this. It must be remembered that the VAZ 2110 is still a high-speed car, and he does not like to drive very slowly, it happens that the coolant boils. This may be due to the cooling fan not running at low speed. It is also possible that your antifreeze boils away, which can no longer be used, which needs to be replaced;
  
• The coolant is going somewhere. This is a fairly common problem for the VAZ 2110, and simply replacing or topping up the level will not help here, you need to look for where the antifreeze flows. Sometimes the liquid comes out in a way that is imperceptible, especially if the temperature reaches the boiling point and evaporates in a way unknown to the driver until now, leaving no visible traces. As practice shows, most often the cause must be sought in the clamps. Sometimes it helps to completely replace them. To be sure that the fluid comes out, you need to check the level on a cold engine. If the engine does not even boil, but is hot enough, if it leaks a little somewhere, then this may not be noticeable: warmed up antifreeze may show a normal level, although this is not so;
  
• The coolant level is normal, that is, at the level of the upper edge of the bar holding the tank, the color has not changed, but the antifreeze boils quickly. There might be an air lock. By the way, when heating-cooling the level changes slightly. But if, during constant checks of the warmed-up VAZ 2110, you notice that the antifreeze is running out, you need to find where, otherwise you won’t be able to replace it.
  

Preparing for replacement

Many are interested in how many liters of coolant are in a VAZ 2110 car, how much can it really be drained and how much should I buy for replacement?

The so-called antifreeze filling volume is 7,8 liters. It is really impossible to drain less than 7 liters, no more. Therefore, in order for the replacement to be successful, it is enough to buy about 7 liters.

In this case, it is very important to adhere to several rules:

• It is highly recommended to buy liquid from the same manufacturer and the same color as in your VAZ 2110. Otherwise, you can get an unpredictable "cocktail" that will ruin your car;
• Pay attention to whether you bought a ready-to-drink (bottled) liquid or a concentrate that needs to be further diluted;
• In order to replace the antifreeze without incident, you need to do this only on a cooled down VAZ 2110. And start the engine only when everything is already connected, flooded, and the tank cap is closed.

Replacement

To change antifreeze, you must first drain the old one:

1. Put on rubber gloves and protect your eyes. Of course, don't touch the filler cap if the engine is boiling.
2. We put the car on a level place. Some experts argue that it is even better if the front is slightly raised, so more fluid can drain, it is better out of the system.
3. Disconnect the VAZ 2110 by removing the negative battery terminal.
4. Remove the ignition module together with the bracket. This gives access to the cylinder block. Substitute a suitable container under the drain plug, where the antifreeze will drain. Install the container and unscrew the drain plug on the cylinder block
5. First, we unscrew the cap of the expansion tank to make it easier to drain the cooler (that is, to create pressure in the system). And let the antifreeze go until it stops coming out. Remove the expansion tank cap
6. Now you need to substitute a container or bucket under the radiator, and also unscrew the plug. You need to drain as much liquid as possible; the bigger, the better.
   
   We put a container under the radiator to drain the coolant and unscrew the drain plug of the radiator
7. When you are sure that no more coolant is coming out, clean the drain holes and the plugs themselves. At the same time, check the fastenings of all pipes and their condition, because if you have had cases of antifreeze boiling, this can adversely affect them.
8. In order for the replacement to be really correct, complete, and you forget what it is like when the engine boils, you need to take into account a few more nuances. If you have an injector, remove the hose at the junction with the nozzle to heat the throttle tube.

   We loosen the clamp and remove the coolant supply hose from the throttle tube heating fitting. If the carburetor, also remove the hose at the junction with the carburetor heating fitting. It is these actions that are necessary so that air congestion does not form.

9. To understand how much antifreeze you need to fill in the VAZ 2110, look at the one that merges. The liquid is poured through the expansion tank until the system is completely filled. It is desirable that the same amount of volume comes out as is emptied.

After the replacement is made, you need to tightly tighten (this is important!) The plug of the expansion tank. Replace the removed hose, reconnect the ignition module, return the cable you removed to the battery and you should be able to start the engine. Let it work a little.

Sometimes this leads to a drop in the coolant level in the reservoir. So, somewhere there was a cork, and it "passed" (checked the fastening of all hoses!). You just need to add antifreeze to the optimum volume.
